ARLEIGH WOOD
After the Rains
follows Wood’s most recent series “Shelter from the Storm”.
These highly textured mixed media paintings are filled with silk screened abandoned shelters, painted geometric shapes, hand drawn roots and trees. Both beautiful and unsettling, these landscapes explore themes of climate change, Japanese Canadian internment, ghost towns, gentrification and human resilience.
While these houses are located in spectacular places such as Vancouver, Iceland and Joshua Tree, the actual location is not of primary importance. It is more the universality and ubiquity of these makeshift shelters and the stories they contain.
These paintings are part of a search for world that offers safety and hope, sometimes steeped in difficult histories, environmental threats or touched by the surreal. After the rains, new shoots grow from the stilted home bases suggesting strength in roots as well as promising beginnings.
